ADJECTIVES

nouveau (masculine) - new
nouvelle (feminine) - new

In French, adjectives agree with the nouns they describe.
Usually the feminine form has an extra ‘e’ but there are many exceptions.
In this unit each feminine adjective is written in full (red).

Exemple: La voiture est nouvelle. The car is new.
Le livre est nouveau. The book is new.

NB The dictionary translation of an adjective is written in the masculine form.

These are useful adjectives for everyday life.

Exemple: Tu es heureux/heureuse? Are you happy?
Oui, je suis heureux/heureuse. Yes, I’m happy.
Non, je ne suis pas heureux/heureuse. No. I’m not happy.
Je suis triste. I’m sad.

GRAMMAR
Usually adjectives are used with the verb 'to be' in French.
Je suis heureux. I am happy.
Il est triste. He is sad.

REMEMBER 'cold' 'hot' 'hungry' and 'thirsty' are used with the verb 'to have' in French when describing how someone feels.
J'ai froid. I am cold.
Elle a soif. She is thirsty.

When describing how something is, you use the verb 'to be'.
L'assiette est froide. The plate is cold.
Ma chambre est froide. My bedroom is cold.
