ADJECTIVES

froid (masculine) - cold
froide (feminine) - cold

In French, adjectives agree with the nouns they describe.
Usually the feminine form has an extra ‘e’ but there are many exceptions.
In this unit each feminine adjective is written in full (red).

REMEMBER 'cold' 'hot' 'hungry' and 'thirsty' are used with the verb 'to have' in French when describing how someone feels.
When using the verb 'to have' the adjectives do not have to agree with the person they are describing.
J'ai froid. I am cold.
Elle a soif. She is thirsty.

If describing an object use the verb 'to be' and the adjectives must agree with the noun they describe.
L'assiette est chaude. The plate is hot.
Les frites sont chaudes. The chips are hot.

NB The dictionary translation of an adjective is written in the masculine form.

These are useful adjectives for everyday life.

Exemple: Tu es heureux/heureuse? Are you happy?
Oui, je suis heureux/heureuse. Yes, I’m happy.
Non, je ne suis pas heureux/heureuse. No. I’m not happy.
Je suis triste. I’m sad.
